How Rich Are You?

I have a running list of things I want to purchase. It’s not a written list, because that would be too blatantly and obviously materialistic. But I have a secret mental list of things I want to buy someday soon.

A high-definition TV
A Nintendo Wii
3 new pairs of shoes (for work,
basketball, and goofing around)
There are always CDs I want (I have 4 in mind right now)
A new sofa and loveseat
New bedroom furniture
A new mountain bike
New sunglasses
And have you seen my bookshelves? There are always books I want.

None of this includes the things I actually NEED to buy soon. Like a new set of tires to replace the ones with metal showing under the tread. I don’t pay much attention to that list, though. It’s no fun.

But I don’t have enough money for all this stuff. So I sometimes think of ways to earn just a little extra cash. You know, a little extra money just to splurge with. And I think how nice it would be to earn just a few thousand extra in salary every year.

Then I come across a site like this.
The Global Rich List.

From the site:
“Every year we gaze enviously at the lists of the richest people in world, wondering what it would be like to have that sort of cash. But where would you sit on one of those lists? Here's your chance to find out.”

Check it out for yourself. Be sure to select the $ as you enter your income.

i should feel ashamed of myself....as a matter of fact i do. i have the same mental list of things i really want and sometimes even convince myself of needing. i am in the top 10% of the richest people in the world. now, never in a million years would i have thought that. and my bank would probably tell you otherwise as well. but, i guess my 3 bedroom/2 bath house is a luxury when compared to a family of 4 or more sleeping on mud floors. very eye opening. and convicting...

That site is amazing! Super humbling. When we complain about how little we think we have, we should go to that site and get a good kick in the britches!
Thanks for sharing that.

I've become very aware of just how rich I am in the past few years as compared to people around the globe. I used to be that person that always wanted more; more money, more stuff, more everything. I had a friend/mentor that always laughingly told people, "Money is not everything...but it's right up there with oxygen." He believed that. I believed that. Not anymore!

I've realized that, in the big scheme of things, money is not nearly as important as being happy. You see people all the time who are super rich and end up taking their own life, getting divorced, getting thrown in jail. Just turn on the TV and it's there every day. Then, you see the missionary on the field serving God, serving others, and with very little income. Why are they so content? What's wrong with this picture? The answer: When you are at the center of God's perfect will for your life...that's where you'll find true happiness.

We're so spoiled here. Every single one of us!! Even someone who lives in government housing, is on food stamps, and welfare...though it may not seem like it, they're still so much wealthier than so many millions of people in this world. It would do us all some good to experience what it is to be truly poor, truly destitute, truly "starving". Then our attitudes would change.

A good friend of mine recently said, "I've just about decided to give up everything of material value and just move to South America and live out my days on a beach." He lives in a HUGE, beautiful house and seemingly has it all. It's all about your perspective. You see, his wife recently had a major stroke and his priorities suddenly changed. We all need to get our priorities straight. Focus on God. Listen, learn, obey. Do His Will. That's what's really important.
